Reflexivity of artists and co-researchers in a context of applied research-creation with migrants: practices, ethics and vulnerability
Abstract
Reflexivity fosters professional development, new knowledge generation, and action improvement. This exercise is particularly relevant in the field of applied research-creation, particularly through artistic interventions aimed at the social transformation of vulnerable populations. Within the framework of a European project, the objective is to analyse the reflexive practices emerging from encounters between 11 artists, researchers and professionals during the co-implementation of artistic workshops in contexts of migratory vulnerability, considering their ethical dimension. Six reflexivity sessions were recorded and analysed through thematic synthesis using qualitative content analysis. The results reveal significant practices and ethical reflections with both retrospective and prospective implications. The presence of vulnerabilities in professional practice highlights the importance of an ethical approach to action, particularly to prevent revictimization and provide appropriate emotional support. These findings demonstrate the potential for professional development through such practices, especially in applied research-creation processes involving vulnerable groups. Establishing a situated interprofessional ethical framework grounded in real-world contexts and interactions and incorporating self-care strategies for both participants and facilitators to promote meaningful social transformation are essential.
