Spanish anti-Franco artists. From the Artothèque de Toulouse to the Abattoirs, Musée-FRAC Occitanie
Abstract
This article analyzes the integration of artists from the anti-Franco resistance into the museum fabric of Toulouse beginning in the 1980s, starting with an institution that emerged from André Malraux's decentralization plans in France, which proposed new spaces in the provinces as an alternative to the capital. In other words, within the framework of this commitment to democratization, artothèques emerged, a type of art library that gave rise to an interesting collection of contemporary art alongside others that emerged in parallel in the region, all of which ended up being integrated into the Musée-Frac Occitanie. This research offers a new approach to the study of the art of exile in France, seeking to understand how the transition from the resistance to the museum took place and what were the ways to access it.
