Contemporary funerary sculpture in Extremadura
Abstract
Contemporary funerary sculpture has hardly been the subject of research in Extremadura (Spain), and this article aims to contribute to partially mitigate this situation. The work is divided into two chapters. The first contextualizes and assesses the interest of the funerary theme, its antecedents, its evolution up to the contemporary period, and various perspectives for study. The main architectural and sculptural typologies are described, along with some iconographic elements and notable examples at national level. Finally, we analyze the peculiarities of the Extremadura region, with singularities such as the colonization villages and the role of both workshops and individual contributions. The second part offers a selective tour of contemporary funerary sculpture in Extremadura. It is a peripheral environment, with limited resources, but where notable examples stand out, worthy of study and comparable in quality to the rest of the national production. The article includes various iconographies and little-studied works by artists such as José Frápolli, Josep Llimona, Eulogio Blasco, Juan de Ávalos, Gabino Amaya and Enrique Pérez Comendador.
