Abstract

This article explores the evolving representation of rural spaces in contemporary Argentine cinema, focusing on two films: Brief Story from the Green Planet (2019) by Santiago Loza and Trenque Lauquen (2022) by Laura Citarella. These films diverge from traditional depictions of rural Argentina, instead portraying the countryside as a benign, communal space. By examining these films, the research aims to uncover how they challenge dominant narratives that separate human and non-human elements and redefine interior and exterior spaces. The analysis delves into the dialogue between Argentine literary and cinematic traditions and the ways these films address contemporary conflicts affecting rural areas and humanity. Brief Story from the Green Planet follows three lifelong friends who return to their hometown, highlighting their personal struggles and the blending of human and non-human experiences. Similarly, Trenque Lauquen navigates the intertwined lives of its characters against the backdrop of a vulnerable yet nurturing rural environment. This study offers a nuanced understanding of how these films reshape rural imaginaries, emphasizing solidarity and collaboration among diverse life forms.
