In, out. On the multifaceted reflexivity of The Wonder (S. Lelio, 2022)
Abstract
The main objective of this article is to identify the different reflexive gestures of The Wonder (S. Lelio, 2022) and to evaluate their discursive function. After a brief approach to the manifestations and effects of reflexivity in cinema in different contexts, we present the typology on which we rely to classify the reflexive elements of the film. At the same time, we look at some concepts
–mainly mise en abyme and metalepsis– that are key to our development. Next, we examine the five fragments of the film that best serve our purposes by using the guidelines of textual analysis. We conclude by stressing how the reflexive motifs of The Wonder punctuate the diegesis and contribute to making explicit the ultimate message of the film. Besides, we focus on the strategy of seduction which tries to engage the audience and makes them embrace that message.
