Journalistic Information in Wikimedia Projects: An Analysis of Wikinews as an Example of Open Journalism
Abstract
This article studies the treatment of news news on the Wikinews platform (a project of the Wikimedia Foundation) and how the project applies the principles that classify the concept of open source journalism: participation, transparency and collaboration. The research codifies and analyzes the presence or absence of these three characteristics and delves into their execution, to quantify the level at which the platform approaches open journalism. In addition, the penetration of Wikinews in the audience and in the user community is studied through two in-depth interviews. In this way, the article values the Wikinews participation, transparency and collaboration tools as positive aspects but determines the difficulty of replicating its model if there is no active community to manage it.
