Being a Mother on TV Fiction: A Comparison between Spanish and American Series
Abstract
This work analyzes the representation of maternity on TV fiction, in order to provide a reflection about how they establish narratives that give meaning to women and their roles within different TV series. With this purpose, a qualitative methodology has been carried out, which analyzes six series of TV fiction, three from Spain and three from America, which at the same time are integrated into two border genres: drama and dramedy. The results indicate that, even though TV fiction incorporates new discourses introducing relevant topics for women today, the representation of motherhood continues to be portrayed from a traditional and patriarchal perspective. However, a certain narrative innovation has been observed in the case of American TV series.
