Participation of Children and Adolescents in the Exploration of Social Determinants of Health: A Methodological Proposal
Abstract
Participatory Diagnostics are a citizen consultation process implemented by Family Health Centers (CESFAM) within the framework of Primary Health Care (PHC) in Chile, where the community expresses its perspective regarding the social determinants of health in the neighborhood. These experiences are frequently conducted with adults, excluding the perspectives of children and adolescents. This study analyzes the experience of CESFAM San José de Rodelillo, in Valparaíso, which incorporated the participation of children and adolescents in the participatory diagnostic, becoming a pioneering experience in the city. The study was conducted from a qualitative and critical approach, using the experience systematization method and semi-structured interviews with nine health and education professionals involved in the community consultation. Results show that the inclusion of children and adolescents expanded the community’s understanding of health, challenged adult-centric stereotypes, and generated institutional learning regarding inclusive participatory methodologies. It is concluded that recognizing children and adolescents as social actors in PHC community participation processes strengthens a rights-based approach to health and contributes to the construction of more equitable and healthy territories.
