Emotional Intelligence and Inclusive Education: Exploring Their Connection

Abstract

Introduction. The research line studying the contributions of emotional intelligence to the field of inclusive education has grown exponentially in recent years. In the age of artificial intelligence, the focus of pedagogy cannot be exclusively on the power of technology (machines). It must also emphasize people, their well-being, their identity, respect for diversity, and the cultivation of both emotional and social intelligence. Method. From an educational perspective, this work presents a theoretical review that analyzes the existing connections between emotional intelligence and inclusive education. Results. The article highlights the importance of building an education for the common good that eradicates exclusion processes and discrimination faced by a significant part of children and youth in Spain. Discussion. The conclusions go beyond traditional demands, often centered on improving initial and ongoing training in emotional intelligence and diversity awareness for professionals in education. Additionally, the discussion addresses other issues, such as: A shift in educational policy to grant greater importance to emotional competence in the curriculum and ensure the right to inclusion as a non-negotiable and urgent matter; Transforming school cultures to make inclusive emotional education possible; A new direction in practice, fostering a sense of belonging and emotional and relational well-being while safeguarding the presence, participation, and achievement of all students without exception.
