Reasons for choosing the profession of teacher. Application of the Fit-Choice scale in a sample of Spanish students
Abstract
Introduction. The present work seeks to know the motivations of those who decide to start in the teaching profession, specifically analysing the influence of variables such as previous degree, gender, type of bachelor's degree (STEM/NON-STEM) and the order of choice of studies. Metod. For this, a sample of 579 students from the five grades taught at the Faculty of Education of the Complutense University of Madrid was used, who responded to the Factors Influencing Teaching Choice (FIT-Choice) instrument. Results. The results show that, in general, the Teaching students are satisfied with the choice made and give a high value to the task of educating, allowing the identification of relevant differences based on the variables studied. Conclusions. A first step to meet the need to attract better students to the teaching profession is to know in depth what are the motivations of those who choose this profession and what variables are associated with their choices. This research is a starting point to implement effective strategies to attract and select good student teachers.
