Abstract

Introduction: The current post-pandemic society demands educational systems the challenge to preparing high school scholars who know how to adapt competently and flexibly to changing, overbearing and day-to-day situations. The purpose of this paper is to describe the internationalist and globalist approaches to International Education to highlight the competencies that students enrolled in the Diploma Programme of the International Baccalaureate allegedly have at the doorstep of access to university.

Method: A documentary analysis was conducted based on the information available regarding mission and vision on the web pages of the participating schools in Catalonia (Spain) that offer the Diploma Program of the International Baccalaureate Organization and the official website of the International Baccalaureate Organization between May 2020 and November 2021.

Results: Regarding the presence of the Diploma Programme in Catalonia, the results show a significant increase in program implementation in the last decade, particularly in private schools in the province of Barcelona. Concerning the international education concept interpretation, the participating schools visualize the students' success from the globalist approach, and the internationalist approach, mindedness as main concepts.

Discussion/Conclusions: this study showed that students' preparation to access university is supposedly academic, personal, and professionally prepared framed by the International Baccalaureate view and guidelines to navigate an international global world, that is not always a reflection of what is understood as globalist and internationalist approaches to international education.
