History of art in future secondary school teachers' memories
Abstract
The main aim of this paper is to deepen an aspect of the History of Art representation as a school subject, namely, the memory of this subject and its teaching-learning process shown by 65 students coming from the Master’s Degree in Secondary Education Teaching (specialization in Geography and History) of the University of Valencia. To this end, a tool (a mixed group self-administration questionnaire) has been designed and has been applied to the sample before taking the masters’ specific module in Didactics of the History of Art. The results of the study reveal, among the participants, a traditional and propaedeutic memories in relation to this subject in the Secondary School, Bachelor and university. This mnemonic heritage, embodied in the future teachers’ conceptions, represent a strong obstacle that the initial teacher training must overcome in order to achieve the renewal of the praxis of History of Art in the classrooms and thus guarantee the relevant critical audiovisual literacy of the students.
