The Francoism purge of the secondary school teacher in Madrid
Abstract
The development of Secondary Education in Madrid is special, since in only 10 years (1929-1939), it went from having 3 to 15 Secondary Education institutes, which caused that an important number of teachers went to the capital from different provinces. This fact provided them, among other things, proximity to this new way of understanding education that had been developing during the first third of the 20th Century, mainly carried out by the Board for Studies Extension and Scientific research (JAE), which was crystallizing in the education policy of the Second Republic opening the door to women. The aim of this article is to analyze the reality of the purge of these specific teachers during Franco regime, and to get to know how it affected them, taking into account gender, teacher category, the institute where they exercised, their relationship, if there was one, with the JAE, and types of positions and penalties they had, all of which will be examined through the purge files.
