Evolution of the academic debate on the Web of Science and Scopus about unfaking news (2014-2019)

Keywords: Fake news, disinformation, misinformation, Scopus, WoS

Abstract

The article presents a map of the evolution and estimation of the academic debate on unfaking news due to the advances in social networks and digital scenarios currently available. For this, 1,973 scientific publications indexed in WoS and Scopus collected and analyzed between 2014 and 2019, related to fake news, disinformation, and misinformation. Based on bibliometric indicators, the use of network analysis tools and the ETS algorithm shows that 2016 is the year that has catalyzed the academic debate around the topic discussed here. A debate characterized so far, among other things, by a lack of uniform criteria on the terms addressed here, a marked mastery of technical approaches, and evident mastery of Anglo-Saxon publishers and academic institutions. The terms misinformation and fake news will end up centralizing the debate on disinformation, at the academic level.
