Contrastive analysis of the diminutives in Spanish and Chinese

Abstract

From the perspective of contrastive linguistics, this article aims to analyze the similarities and differences of diminutive suffixes between Chinese and Spanish languages. The contrast mainly includes four aspects: first, it focuses on features of the diminutive suffixes, their morphological and semantic limitations, also the incompatible situation with other roots. Secondly, it refers to the pragmatic functions of the diminutive suffixes (intimacy, politeness, strengthening or weakening of the tone), and the grammatical function of changing the word class of the root. Third, it will focus on the lexicalization of the diminutive suffixes and their productivity to read the reason and result. Fourth, from the perspective of cognitive linguistics through prototype, conceptual metaphor and metonymy analysis to study how Chinese and Spanish diminutives contact the object size with subjective emotion. Finally, according to above analysis results, this paper will put forward some useful suggestions for the teaching of Spanish diminutives.
