Discursive markers of transition between paragraphs in non-expert academic writing: analysis of a corpus of reviews.
Abstract
This paper analyses, within the framework of textual macrostructure, the discursive marks that make explicit the transition between paragraphs in non-expert writing of academic reviews. First, we present the characteristics of the paragraph in the framework of academic writing, as well as the mechanisms of interparagraphic transition, and then the use of these mechanisms is studied in a corpus of 27 reviews written by first-year university students. Although the work focuses on the text as the result of the writing process, a didactic sequence is also provided to guide the student in the use of cohesion strategies and discursive marking between paragraphs. Methodologically, we start from the work of Martínez Caro (2014) to focus on different discursive marks of a macro-structural nature: those that indicate thematic progression, thematic expressions, discourse markers and, finally, modalization strategies.
