Contrastive study of negative prefixes in Spanish and Mandarin Chinese

Keywords: contrastive morphology, negative prefixes, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish language, teaching and learning

Abstract

This paper analyzes, describes and contrasts the Spanish negative prefixes a-, des-, in- and no with the Mandarin Chinese prefixes wú- [无], fēi- [非], bù- [不], fǎn- [反], in order to assess differences and similarities in the formation of words with negative meaning according to their morphological, semantic and syntactic properties. In addition to other results, it is shown that, in Mandarin Chinese, there are negative prefixes, and that these share many characteristics with the prefixes of Spanish in terms of word formation, so that this contribution can serve both lexicographic studies and those who teach or learn these two languages.
