Abstract

This paper presents the results of the first analysis of a problem faced by people of Tepehua origin in their communities in the municipality of Tlachichilco, Veracruz. This problem arises when their first acquired language (L1) is Spanish and they cannot speak in Tepehua because they do not have the articulatory skills to produce words or phrases in that language. To analyze this problem, error analysis was applied to pronunciation. Specifically, the consonant [q ɢ ʡ ʂ ʐ] and vowel sounds [ɒ ɶ ɑ ɔ ʌ oe æ ʊ ɤ] were compared, whose phonetic realization is common for Tepehua L1 speakers, but they are uncommon or imperceptible for Tepehua L2 speakers with Spanish as L1.
