Language and discourse on women in the Spanish press: tradition and evolution through the eyes of two columnists
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to analyze the columns on language (CSL) published in the newspaper La Vanguardia and written by Ramón Carnicer in the 1970s and Magí Camps, in the second decade of the 21st century. Our hypothesis is that CSL are the product of a linguistic tradition, but at the same time, they are an ideal instrument for observing the evolution of a language. Results show that the two authors share the same interes for linguistic correctness and the same themes in their journalistic collaborations, although they are separated by a distance of nearly fifty years. But also the columns are an excellent sample to study the evolution towards modern Spanish and the changes in attitude towards certain issues such as inclusive language. We will contrast their masculine vision on the subject with that of a female columnist, Elena Álvarez Mellado, which will allow us to check whether differences are established between the two sexes on this subject.
