Repertoire of higher education students’ manual gestures
Abstract
Compared to its written counterpart, oral communication in academic settings has been sparsely studied. This has an impact on teaching environments where there are few descriptions about non-verbal communication. In this context, the objective of the study at hand is to describe the repertoire of manual gestures used by students enrolled in a Spanish teacher training program pedagogical training in a Chilean university from a pragmatic-discursive perspective. For this, eight audio-visual recordings of formal oral exams were analyzed. As a result of this study, we propose a classification of three types of manual gestures based on their pragmatic-discursive function and operation in relation to the oral verbal text: illustrative manual gestures, calling manual gestures, and organizational manual gestures.
