From realative verbs to introductory verbs of other people's discourse: a contrastive study in Spanish and Chinese
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to study the introductory verbs of the two main citation procedures: the direct speech and the indirect speech in two contrasting languages: Spanish and Chinese. To reveal the origin of introductory verbs, we rely on the theory of speech acts and realize that they have two origins: the enunciative verb, which is found in the implicit enunciative structure “Te digo”, and the illocutive verbs which have a realizative value. The two sources of introductory verbs are the same in both Chinese and Spanish. But in Chinese, the verb “decir” 说 (shuō) undergoes the process of grammaticalization and transforms into the quotative marker.
