Towards a methodology for the study of prelinguistic intonation in reading
Abstract
In this article, we offer a methodological proposal that was piloted in 2017 and it was proved to be effective in exploring the relationships between the prosodic decoding strategies of 72 schoolers and their level of reading comprehension. Traditionally, prosody in reading has been studied from parameters such as the number of pauses and / or the quality of syntactic groups that a reader encodes. Sometimes, prosody has been explored from the percentages of tonal descent that are found at the end of read isolated sentences. Our methodological proposal allows for studying the prelinguistic intonation of the readers (the way they organize discourse) using only phonic and suprasegmental parameters. It has the advantage of being applicable to the reading of any text, in any non-tonal language and with very broad samples of informants.
