On memory verbs. A diachronic approach
Abstract
This research analyses the argument configuration and variations in the use of the Spanish memory verbs acordarse, olvidar(se), and recordar, with an emphasis on the diachronic perspective. Historical data show a different behaviour of these verbs in relation to transitive structures. Medieval events show a very varied argument syntax, with all kinds of interferences and crossovers between the main verbs of this semantic domain. The verb olvidar, perhaps due to the lack of control in its basic meaning, has been attracted since ancient times to configurations of uncontrolled events that have not been adopted by their opposite recordar
