Abstract

This paper discusses art therapy and arts in well-being in disaster situations from a psychosocial perspective. Arts in well-being is applied here as an umbrella term that includes actions by artists, cultural agents, educators, and artistic mediators in the field of community protection from cultural approaches to disasters. This discussion derives from the analysis of concepts present in the literature in the field of study and from community interventions in Chile.

First, the notion of a psychosocial approach and community art therapy is developed; then, a discussion is held on the concepts of ‘the disruptive’, post-traumatic stress, resilience, post-traumatic growth, recovery and potential space in the context of psychosocial recovery after socio-natural disasters. In community art therapy, the boundaries with participatory arts in social action are a subject of ongoing debate. This work seeks to contribute to this discussion, especially with regard to mediatisation in the face of disruption.
