From practice to research in contemporary art, the production of knowledge through creation
Abstract
For some years now, a concern has been generated especially from the academic world, to observe art beyond the final product, to make aware of and to spread the processes of ideation and production in art, and the intention for study artistic practice under generated arguments through formal research.Artistic research, like the one carried out in other fields of specialization, has its particularities, each possible way of generating and materializing a project or study is related to the characteristics of the creative practice. The theory-practice binomial is carried out differently if the research has art for subject of study, if it is generated from its technical domain, or if its objective is the creation of new works that answer a research question. This paper explores, through the typologies of three main authors: Christopher Fryling, Juan Fernando de Laiglesia and Henk Borgdorff, the possibilities of artistic research describing its distinctive features and the coincidences between them. The goal is to show how artistic research can be materialized, as well as to know what makes it different from creation by itself, putting practice-based research on the table as a valuable exercise that allows generating useful knowledge for others.
