Abstract

This article briefly reviews the genesis of and progress in the investigation of the funetional specialization (lateralization of functions) of the cerebral hemispheres, which genesis occurred in the 1830s. Re review is complemented by a psychoanalytic approach proposing that a dialogue be held between the two hemispheres; a preliminary listing of the two types of consciousness considered to exist back in antiquity, conceptual and syrnbolic; and an itemization of the most significant Por vía de ejemplo, véase Romero (1996). 107 Carlos Pérez-Rubín La creatividad y la inspiración intuitiva. Génesis y evolución,.. differential features between the Western (analytical) and the Eastern (synthesizing) mentalities. Ever since the studies conducted by American neurobiologist R.W. Sperry, 1981 Nobel Prizewinner, the right cerebral hemisphere is felt to govern space perception and to be responsible for emotional, creative and artistic thinking, unless there has been an hemispherical inversion. Sorne people' nevertheless take a negative attitude to this type of investigation, ignoring the wealth of contemporary relevant bibliography in English generated since the 1950s with developing technology.
