The Collection and Exhibitions of "L'art des fous" Organized by the Psychiatrist Auguste Marie in Montparnasse (Paris, 1927-1929). Their Reception in Spain
Abstract
This paper examines art within the psychiatric space, focusing on early twentieth-century Paris and psychiatrist Auguste Marie (1865-1934). Marie, who has received significant attention over the past decade, played a crucial role in shifting from a clinical to an artistic perspective on psychiatric manifestations. The article is structured into six sections, including an introduction and conclusion. Between the second and fourth sections, it contextualizes Marie, his profession, and his contributions to the arts, detailing the collection he established at the Villejuif Asylum for the Insane and two avant-garde exhibitions he organized in 1920s Paris. The fifth section explores the reception of his work in Spain, providing a brief over view of the issue there. The main aims are to offer new interpretations of the relationship between art in psychiatric hospitals and the period's artistic milieu and to disseminate Marie's work.
