The displacements of home movies in Spain. Between the archive, artistic practice, and research
Abstract
Home movies have garnered increasing interest over the past decades in various parts of the world. In this article, after characterizing this type of audiovisual material, various initiatives and projects related to the recovery and archiving of home movies in Spain are described and analyzed. The social agents propelling such projects, who express concern for home movies, primarily belong to three realms: 1) archives and film libraries, 2) the film and visual arts sphere, and 3) academic research. Once these agents are identified, an analysis ensues regarding the displacement of home movies towards archiving institutions of diverse nature and how, in this process, their significance and treatment undergo transformation. Given the variability in the uses and meanings of home movies based on the position and interests of each type of agent, a differentiated analysis is conducted for each identified realm. Finally, after examining the main disciplines interested in the documentary value of home movies, with social sciences not prominently featured among them, several avenues for ethnographic research are proposed based on these visual materials.
