The caring city. Infrastructure for an art in common
Abstract
This article proposes that the creation of common infrastructures can be based on care theory. It addresses the way in which common spaces in the city provide context and backing for an alternative artistic creation. In order to do this, an analysis of the private, public and common models, is carried out in relation to the creation of urban space. It is also approached an identification of relationship possibilities between each model. The theory of care is proposed as the methodology that prevails in the management of the commons since it entails a vindication of reproductive work. Based on the study of several projects, this article establishes a classification of two types of intersection between contemporary artistic practice and common spaces. Dividing the artistic projects that are constituted as commons, from the common spaces that offer an infrastructure for creation. The relationship that these projects maintain with the public system is also analysed, from non-interaction relationship to a subsidy of resources. The aim of the article is also to show the capacity of commons as a provider of relational and material infrastructures for artistic creation.
