The transformation of museums in recent years. Main changes perceived by visitors
Abstract
Over the last few years, different approaches and disciplines have deepened the social work
of museums and in the way they have been transformed to reach their audiences. However, can we say
that Spanish museums have changed to be more visitor-oriented? What is the perception of the visitors
themselves and who perceive the changes most? The article answers these questions by analysing the
results of a questionnaire administered to 685 visitors in 16 Spanish museums between October and
December 2019. The analysis of the data reveals that, in general terms, the public does perceive the
social changes experienced by the museums in recent years and, specifically, those who perceive the
changes most intensely are women, elderly people and those visitors that give more importance to the
practice of visiting museums than to other cultural practices.
