Women artists from Latin America in exhibitions in Spain: the guests
Abstract
The current essay reflects on the representation of works by Latin American women artists in
group exhibitions held in Spain. Based on data that shows the inequality participation among male and
female Latin American artists in exhibitions organized from the late 1970s to the present day, a series of
questions and assertions are raised that allow us to understand why works by female artists from Latin
America were not selected for these exhibitions and, consequently, do not take part of the canon of the
History of Latin American Art. In order to understand the enormous gap left by the absence of women
artists and works, answers are sought in the artists present: what does it mean to be Latin American, a
woman and an artist within the hegemonic art scene?, which artists managed to participate in the “great
Latin American exhibitions”?, and what narrative prevailed in the few collective exhibitions dedicated
exclusively to women artists?
