Film References in Walter Benjamin’s Essay "The Work of Art in the Age of Its Technological Reproducibility": Documentary Genetics and Audiovisual Resources
Abstract
From what here is called documentary genetics, the original publications on cinema used by Benjamin during the writing of the latest 1939 version of the essay “The Work of Art in the Age of Its Technological Reproducibility” will be dissected. This article will be focused on both authors and film texts quoted by Benjamin, as well as on the theories where these texts emanated from. First-hand documentary sources are substantial to contrast the state of film theories at the time with Benjamin’s own thinking. Furthermore, this quoting system is linked with the “literary montage” method used by Benjamin. The written sources will be expanded with the films also mentioned through the essay.
