From non-place to junkspace: design of global spaces
Abstract
Between the publication of Marc Augé “The non-places; Spaces of anonymity “(its first french edition dates from 1992) and Rem Koolhas “The junkspace” (2002) ten years have passed by. Both are emblematic texts of critical literature regarding the globalization spatial universe during the last decades. In this paper I argue that, beyond the nostalgic or provocative character of these proposals, the authors are pointing to a crisis of civilization affecting spaces and individuals. In particular, the present comparative analysis and contextualization of the concepts will point to how the architecture made between the publication of both texts, instead of reducing the alienating effects of non-places, has led to a saturation and banalization of stylistic tools described by the concept of junkspace.
