Rape and Revenge in Remake’s Era: From I Spit On Your Grave (Meir Zarchi, 1978) to I Spit on Your Grave (Steven R. Monroe, 2010)
Abstract
This research studies the relationship between I Spit On Your Grave (Meir Zarchi, 1978), and its remake of the same title, directed by Steven R. Monroe in 2010, examining the evolution of rape revenge and how social, technological and cinematic contexts influence the original and the remake. Through a comparative filmic analysis focusing on contextual, narrative and formal parameters, the similarities and differences between the two films are pointed out. This analysis allows us to trace the evolution of rape revenge in the context of the remake, showing that there are few changes with respect to the feminist perspective, the vision of sexual violence and punitivism, although there is a graphic increase in on-screen violence, both sexual violence and the revenge carried out by the protagonist.
