Video Games as Spaces of Interaction: Preferences and Practices of Digital Natives in Spain
Abstract
Video games are a very popular form of entertainment and interaction among young people. This paper analyzes the behaviors and perceptions of Millennials and Z generations in Spain towards interaction through video games, whether it is a functional type of interaction, focused on the game, or a socializing type of interaction, with social interests. To this end, the role of weak ties is analyzed, an intergenerational comparison is established and differences by gender are explored. The study employs a triangular methodology combining surveys and focus groups for a descriptive and explanatory analysis of their interactional behaviors. It is observed that digital natives in Spain have an ambivalent relationship with interaction. Although they participate in it, they are very cautious when it comes to exposing themselves. It is noted that Zs are more open than Millennials to interaction, and that girls of both generations protect themselves from cyberbullying.
