The Superhero According to Marvel: Gender and Simulacrum
Abstract
Over the past 15 years, Marvel’s box office successes have established it as a leader in its industry. The aim of this article is to analyse one of these blockbusters: Thor: Love and Thunder (Taika Waititi, 2020). A narrative analysis is conducted on the four characters who appear in the role of superheroes: Thor, The Mighty Thor, Valkyrie and Korg, both the dialogues and the actions. From the sociology of the heroic, and queer studies, the focuses are on how these characters are (re)presented and differentiated from each other. The inclusion of a heterosexual woman, a lesbian and a gay man in the story suggests an idea of diversity, but each of these characters is carefully delimited, so that they end up being reduced to extras. Finally, the protagonist of the story is the male character of Thor.
