Understanding medieval theatre through film art:

Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal (1957)

Keywords: Medieval Theatre, Cinema, Ingmar Bergman, Seventh Seal, History of the Theatre

Abstract

The medieval setting of The Seventh Seal not only provides the historical background for the return of the Crusades and the plague, which became a motive for religious and existential reflection, but also suggests a form and a background that is eminently theatrical. This study analyses the treatment of the different theatrical manifestations in the film, from the figure of the jester or the minstrel to kermesse, from "morality" to comedy, from an anachronistic form of tragedy to the dance of death.
