Genocidal wars vs peoples in resistance. The non-existence of childhood, from Chiapas to Gaza

Keywords: childhood, war, colonization, memory, resistance

Abstract

The war of conquest and occupation responds to an ontological logic that not only seeks to appropriate the territories and natural resources but also the symbolic, historical and memory spaces defended by the peoples in resistance. Apartheid in Palestine (1968-2024) and the internal armed conflicts of Latin Americans such as that of Chiapas in Mexico (1983-2024) have responded for decades to colonization processes, in which military strategists not only seek to erase the history of colonized but the possibility of the future, looking at children and adolescents as the enemies to defeat.  However, indigenous Zapatista and Palestinian childhoods, in addition to having lived for generations in a context of violence and colonization, have also been part of a process of struggle for their territory and emancipation of their people. Through the historical documentary-journalistic review in the case of Palestine and ethnographic review in Chiapas, we approach the political participation of children in contexts of extreme violence and the way in which they have learned to fight, play, resist and know that they deserve a decent place under the sun.
