Playing, music and raising: children (en)sing life in Mozambique
Abstract
The focus of this article is to establish a dialogue with the musical creation that manifests itself in the daily lives of Mozambican children. In the communities of southern Mozambique, children take their leading role and are actively involved in social life in various ways, especially in activities circumvented by rhythms. Music, like playing, are considered significant activities for children, and may appear in a sung, experienced bodily, exploratory or listening form, integrating the children’s worlds and universes in which they subscribe. Based on an ethnographic study between 2014 and 2018 in three communities in southern Mozambique, this article presents some narratives constructed with children in performative creation forms, indicating the existence of their own, shared, and collective knowledge.
