Children’s and Youth’s Life Perspectives in Foster and Residential Care
Abstract
This study aimed to understand the perspectives of life of children and young people, between 11 and 15 years old, who are in foster or residential care. It was intended to reflect on the factors that contribute to their subjective well-being through their speeches in the context of four focus groups. It was concluded that these children and young people considered their current situation to be more advantageous than they had before with their biological families, enjoying more material goods and, in particular in the case of foster care, felt the affection they need to their harmonious development. The main difference between the two groups seems to be their future prospects, in which the majority of children and young people in foster care expressed a desire to enter the labor market early, while those in residential care all wanted to complete higher education.
