Author Guidelines
1. Introduction
De Medio Aevo accepts original and unpublished papers related to its fields of interest, indicated at the top of its Homepage. It publishes original studies, carried out with methodological rigor, and which suppose a contribution to research in these fields, without eluding the multidisciplinarity that characterizes this field of knowledge.
Each biannual issue of the journal turns around a "Monographic" theme, although it also has two other Sections of "Miscellany", and "Reviews."
The deadlines for the reception of papers will be October 31 of the previous year for the issue of the first semester of the following year, and March 3i for the issue of the second semester of that year.
Authors must register with the role of "Author" in the link
<https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/DMAE/user/register>. There they will obtain a Username and a password with which they can start the process of submitting papers after entering the journal at the link <https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/DMAE/ login>.
Articles may be written in Spanish, English, French, German, Italian, or Portuguese.
The articles will be presented online, through the link https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/DMAE/about/submissions, in editable files (.odt; .doc; .rtf) and suitably anonymized.
The personal information of the authors should not appear under any circumstances in any part of the article, that is, neither in the central text nor in the footnotes nor the bibliography. Any reference to identify the author should be removed. The author's personal information (name, surname, institution, email, ORCID and other details indicated in point 2 below) will be recorded on a separate sheet (See "First page" below).
De Medio will notify authors upon receipt of their submitted articles. The editorial team will verify that the text aligns with one of the journal's research areas and adheres to the journal's formatting guidelines. Articles will be scanned using the Turnitin plagiarism detection software to assess their originality. Articles that pass this initial check will be submitted to two external peer reviewers using a double-blind peer-review process. In the event of a tie between the two reviewers, a third reviewer will be consulted to resolve the tie. If the external reviews are positive, the editorial team will accept the article after the author has made the changes and corrections suggested by the reviewers.
The authors should observe the enclosed "Guide to Good Practice"
De Medio Aevo does not charge any fee for submitting the paper or for the process of evaluating and publishing it.
2. First page
The first page, submitted as a separate file from the article, must include the following information:
a) Name of the author(s), academic degree, position(s) held, name of the scientific institution(s) to which they belong or with which they collaborate or are affiliated, email address, and ORCID code (if registered).
b) An explicit declaration of original authorship and the unpublished nature of the article, that it is not under review by another journal, that the images or illustrations included are free of copyright fees, compliance with the code of good practices, and transfer of rights to Ediciones Complutense.
c) An explicit declaration, if applicable, of any financial support received for the research, including the full reference.
In the case of more than one author, the journal will respect the order chosen by the authors (ISO 215: 4.2.1), as well as the number of authors of the work.
3. Extension
The articles for the "Monographic" and "Miscellany" sections will have a maximum length of 25 pages, equivalent to about 75,000 characters, including spaces, abstract, footnotes, and references (sources and bibliography). Reviews will have a maximum length of 3 or 4 pages, equivalent to about 9,000 / 12,000 characters with spaces.
4. Format of the texts
The works will be presented strictly following the Template provided,
a) Title of the article in the original language.
c) Abstract of approximately 150 to 250 words, which should succinctly reflect the central theme, objectives, methodology, and structure of the article.
d) Keywords (between 5 and 8), separated by semicolons.
e) English translation of the title, abstract, and keywords. If the article is written in English, the title, abstract, and keywords should be translated into Spanish.
f) Summary of the different sections into which the article is subdivided.
9) How to cite: It will be presented as a bibliographic entry according to the following model: Author's Last Name, First Initial. (2026). Title of the article (without quotation marks). De Medio Aevo 16/1: xx-xx. DOI: xxxxx
Submissions must strictly follow the provided template.
The main text should be in Times New Roman, 10.5-point font, single-spaced. All paragraphs of the main text, except the first paragraph of each section, heading, or subheading, will be indented 0.5 cm from the left margin.
Footnotes will be in 8-point Times New Roman font with single line spacing and a hanging indent of 0.5 cm, including the first line of each note.
Do not use bold or underline to emphasize words. Use italics for emphasis.
The work must be submitted electronically, preferably in Word for Windows or another word processor compatible with Windows or Macintosh. The use of Unicode fonts is mandatory.
If the article is part of a specific program or has received funding, this information must be indicated in a footnote following the title of section 1. Introduction.
5. Guidelines for the body of the main text
a) Short terms or expressions in foreign languages will also be italicized, except for Greek, Arabic, Hebrew, and Chinese (in which case the Unicode font must be indicated). This does not apply to paragraphs in foreign languages included in the text or footnotes, which will also be in regular type.
b) Chapter, section, and subsection titles, captions, and information in graphs or tables will be written in lowercase (except for initial letters) and will not end with a period.
c) Sections and subsections will be numbered sequentially with Arabic numerals according to the scheme: 1., 1.1., 1.1.1., without exceeding the third level. Within these sections, the first must always be " Introduction," and the last two "n. Conclusions" and "m. References. m.1. Sources. m.2. Bibliography" (with their respective numbers).
d) The headings of figures, tables, and graphs should be written in Times New Roman 10-point font, centered, and numbered as follows: Fig. 1, Fig. 2; Tab. 1, Tab. 2; Graph 1, Graph 2.
e) Images, tables, and graphs should be included in the text in their appropriate places, accompanied by their respective captions. It is the author's responsibility to provide images of sufficient resolution and quality for printing (preferably 300 dpi), obtain the necessary permissions for reproducing someone else's work, and ensure that the corresponding attributions appear in accordance with the terms of the copyright agreement. The recommended file formats for photographic reproductions or images with nuances are JPG, JPEG or TIFF, with a desirable resolution of 300 dpi.
6. Quotations in the text and at the foot of the page
Authors must adhere to the following guidelines for their articles:
a) Footnotes, indicated in the text with a superscript number, should be placed in 8-point font, single-spaced, with a hanging indent of 0.5 cm. If the superscript number is adjacent to any punctuation mark, it should always follow that mark (e.g., 13). Footnotes with an asterisk are not permitted.
b) Direct quotations within the text should be set in regular font and enclosed in quotation marks when they do not exceed three lines. For quotations exceeding three lines, they should be set in a 10-point block font, without quotation marks, indented 1.5 cm from the left margin, and separated before and after the main text by a single line space.
c) Quotation marks should be double quotation marks (“”). A word or short phrase in a foreign language should be written in italics, and its translation should be placed in parentheses in regular font. To differentiate parentheses within other parentheses, square brackets ([]) will be used.
d) Citations will follow the Chicago 17A style, always in footnotes. The first time a work is cited, it will be in its entirety. Examples: Full bibliographic reference in footnote. Footnote: Guy Cowlishaw and Robin Dunbar, Primate Conservation Biology (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2000), 104–7. Repeated citation from the same book (abbreviated): Cowlishaw and Dunbar, Primate, 49. Full citation in the Bibliography: Cowlishaw, Guy, and Robin Dunbar. Primate Conservation Biology. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2000. Bibliographic references according to the Chicago 17A style will not be included in the body of the text, but rather in the footnotes.
e) If several authors are cited in the same footnote, they will be separated by semicolons. E.g.: García Berrio, Theory of Literature, 51-52; Albaladejo and Chico Rico, “The theory of linguistic and formal criticism”, 184-233, and Chico Rico, “Text Theory and Literary Linguistics”, 229.
7. References (Sources and Bibliography) cited.
a) At the end of the article, the Sources and Bibliography (including newspaper and online sources) will be listed separately, in alphabetical order by author. Only references that have been actually cited will be included. When citing references at the end and in footnotes, authors will strictly follow the Chicago 17A.
b) Works by the same author will be listed chronologically, including the author's name each time. If the same author has several works published in the same year, they will be differentiated by adding one of the first letters of the alphabet to each year (a, b, c, d…): 2024a, 2024b, 2024c…
c) References to documents and manuscripts will follow this format: Type of document or manuscript (letter, consultation, report, court order, decree…), authorship or producing entity, and recipient (if known), date (place, day, month, and year). and then the current call number of the archive or library through which the documentation is accessed: full name of the archive or library (adding its abbreviation in capital letters in the first reference), collection, unit in the corresponding language (file/leg., manuscript/ms., box/caj., folder/carp., file/exp.…), and foliation/pagination (if necessary, using the formula fol./fols. or p./pp.). Example:
In a footnote:

If a document has already been mentioned, its shelfmark will be abbreviated using the archive or library initials included in the note corresponding to the first mention.
d) Citations from journals or electronic media on the internet should include all the necessary information according to the preceding guidelines (author, year, title, publication, city, etc.), and the internet address should be indicated, followed in parentheses by "Accessed on…" (date of last access). Examples:
In a footnote:

e) When the cited work or article has a DOI number, this must be included in the bibliographic reference. Example: Last Name, First Name: Title of the article, Journal, Volume, Year. http://dx.doi.org/xxxx
8. Illustrations
De Medio Aevo allows the inclusion of illustrations (images, plans, and graphs) up to a maximum of twenty. Their source must always be identified. Illustrations in the manuscript must adhere to the size and presentation format recommended by the journal's layout designers.
Illustrations or images, whether in color or black and white, must comply with the following guidelines:
a) All illustrations or images must be submitted in JPG, TIFF, or BMP format, with sufficient resolution, preferably 300 dpi.
b) They must be labeled “Fig.”, numbered sequentially with Arabic numerals, and identified with all relevant information in the caption, including the source or origin of the image. Captions, with all their information, should have a maximum of three lines. A separate Word file with the list of captions and their respective numbers (Fig. 1. xxx; Fig. 2. zzz) must be submitted.
c) Images and their respective captions should be included in the appropriate place within the article text. d) The authors of the articles must guarantee in writing that the submitted images are free of copyright fees, either because such fees have already been paid or because the images are in the public domain. In any case, they must cite their source and authorship, based on the right of quotation established in Article 32 of the Intellectual Property Law.
e) The journal De Medio Aevo is not responsible for any litigation arising from the misuse of the images.
9. Submission Preparation Checklist
As part of the submission process, authors are asked to confirm that their submission meets all of the following requirements:
- The article is submitted following the Editorial Guidelines and Template found in “About the Journal” (articles that do not conform will be rejected).
- The article is fully anonymized (no author names appear in the text, footnotes, or bibliography).
- The article has not been previously published, nor has it been submitted to another journal.
- The submitted file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF format.
- Web addresses have been added for references where possible.
- DOIs have been added where available.
- The article is being submitted to a peer-reviewed section of the journal.
- The Declaration of Authorship is signed by all authors.
- A signed copy of the Copyright Transfer Agreement has been sent to Ediciones Complutense. 10. The author's ID has been submitted: ORCID, Redalyc, ResearchGate, Mendeley, Academia, Google Citations, etc.
Articles that do not comply with these requirements will be returned to their authors.
10. Evaluation of articles
De Medio Aevo reserves the right to reject any manuscript based on quality, format, or editorial presentation criteria before it proceeds to the evaluation process. Articles will be submitted for evaluation in three phases:
a) Initial Formal Review: The Editorial Board will conduct an initial analysis of the article to verify that it meets the requirements outlined in these "Guidelines for Authors." If it does not, it will be returned to the author for revision. The article will then be analyzed using the Turnitin plagiarism detection software.
b) Double-Blind Peer Review: Articles that pass this initial formal review and the Turnitin analysis will be submitted to two specialists of recognized prestige in the field, external to the Editorial Board, for evaluation using a double-blind peer review process, which ensures the anonymity of both the author and the reviewers. The fundamental criteria considered for a positive evaluation of articles will be the relevance of the sources, the quality of the methodology, the originality of the topic, the academic relevance, the up-to-dateness of the bibliography, compliance with editorial guidelines, correct writing in the language of publication, the structure of the work, the validity of the conclusions, and the overall scientific interest of the text, as well as its most significant contributions to the fields covered by the journal.
The referees' evaluations will result in one of four outcomes: “Accepted,” “Accepted with minor revisions,” “Accepted with substantial revisions,” or “Rejected.”
In the event of a disagreement between the two assigned referees, the article will be evaluated by a third specialist, whose decision will break the tie.
In the cases of “Accepted with minor revisions” and “Accepted with substantial revisions,” the article will be returned to the author for the requested modifications or corrections. If the text is "Rejected," the authors will be notified of the reasons given by the reviewers for this decision.
De Medio Aevo commits to initiating and completing the evaluation process within a maximum of three months. The authors will be informed of the result of this review, as well as the reviewers' comments and recommendations.
After receiving the reports, the author will have fifteen business days to make the corrections and amendments suggested by the reviewers and to upload the final, corrected version to our platform. The Editorial Board will verify that this final version includes the required changes, as a prerequisite for publication of the article.
The author must correct the initial proofs within a maximum of fifteen business days from the date of submission. During proofreading, the author may only make corrections of typographical errors, without significant modifications to the text.
Accepted works will be published in their proposed form, except in the case of grammatical or writing errors. In the latter case, the Editorial Board, without interfering in substantive matters regarding the content of the article, will have the freedom to introduce slight modifications relating to writing, spelling, punctuation and graphic design.
