Author Guidelines

1. Introduction

De Medio Aevo accepts original and unpublished papers related to its fields of interest, indicated at the top of its Homepage. It publishes original studies, carried out with methodological rigor, and which suppose a contribution to research in these fields, without eluding the multidisciplinarity that characterizes this field of knowledge.

Each biannual issue of the journal turns around a "Monographic" theme, although it also has three other Sections of "Miscellany", "Reviews," and "In Memoriam."

The deadlines for the reception of papers will be November 15 of the previous year for the issue of the first semester of the following year, and April 30 for the issue of the second semester of that year.

Authors must register with the role of "Author" in the link

<https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/DMAE/user/register>. There they will obtain a Username and a password with which they can start the process of submitting papers after entering the journal at the link <https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/DMAE/ login>.

Articles may be written in Spanish, English, French, German, Italian, or Portuguese.

The articles will be presented online, through the link https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/DMAE/about/submissions, in editable files (.odt; .doc; .rtf) and suitably anonymized.

The personal information of the authors should not appear under any circumstances in any part of the article, that is, neither in the central text nor in the footnotes nor the bibliography. Any reference to identify the author should be removed. The author's personal information (name, surname, institution, email, ORCID and other details indicated in point 2 below) will be recorded on a separate sheet (See "First page" below).

De Medio Aevo will notify the authors of the receipt of their submitted articles. These will be forwarded to two external evaluating arbitrators through the "double-blind peer-review process" system. In case of a tie between the evaluations of the two reviewers, we will request the assessment of a third external referee to settle the tie. After receiving the external assessments, the Editorial Board of the journal reserves the option to accept or reject the article and to recommend the author to make some changes. The author will be notified of the evaluators' decision no later than three months after the submission of his article.

The authors should observe the "Guide to Good Practice" that we include in the file of the same name.

De Medio Aevo does not charge any fee for submitting the paper or for the process of evaluating it.

2. First page

The first page of the article, sent in a separate file (the article should NOT have this first page), will include the following information:

a) Article title in the original language, centered. Do not write it in capital letters. In case of the article is within a specific program or has some funding, such information must be indicated in a footnote that appears from the title of the article.

b) Name of the author(s), academic degree(s), position(s) he/she occupies, name of the scientific institution to which he/she belongs, or collaborates or is related to, email address, ORCID code (if registered), and telephone.

c) Summary of about 10/12 lines (150 to 200 words), which must synthetically reflect the objectives, methodology, and conclusions of the article.

d) Keywords (between 4 and 6), separated by semicolon.

e) Translation of the title, abstract, and keywords into English. If the article is written in English, the title, the abstract, and the keywords will be translated into Spanish.

f) Summary (in Spanish) of the different sections into which the article is subdivided.

g) Express declaration of original authorship and the unpublished nature of the article, that it is not subject to arbitration in another journal, that the images or illustrations included in it are free from the payment of copyright, compliance with the code of good practices, and transfer of rights to Ediciones Complutense.

h) An explicit declaration, if applicable, of the financial support received for the preparation of the investigation, indicating its full reference.

If there is more than one author, the journal will respect the order chosen by the authors (ISO, 215: 4.2.1), as well as the number of authors of the work.

3. Extension

The articles for the "Monographic" and "Miscellany" sections will have a maximum length of 25 pages, equivalent to about 75,000 characters, including spaces, abstract, footnotes, and references (sources and bibliography). Reviews will have a maximum length of 3 or 4 pages, equivalent to about 9,000 / 12,000 characters with spaces.

4. Format of the texts

The works will be presented strictly following the Template provided,

The central text will be in Times New Roman with a 10.5 point body with exact line spacing. All the paragraphs of the main text, except the first of each section, epigraph, or sub-subtitle, will be indented 0.5 cm. on the left margin.

Footnotes in Times New Roman will be an 8-point body with single line spacing and 0.5 cm French indentation, including the first line of each note.

Do not use bold or underline to emphasize words. Italics will be used to mark the emphasis. Foreign language terms or expressions will also be in italics.

The paper will be presented on computer media, preferably in Word for Windows or in some other word processor compatible with the Windows or Macintosh environment. Unicode fonts are essential.

5. Guidelines for the body of the main text

a) The abbreviations used are cf., vid., s. v., esp., e.g., op. cit., art. cit., infra, supra. For the rest of the abbreviations the most common in each discipline will be used, trying to respect the rules of the RAE regarding the use of capital letters, lowercase and italics, as it appears in the list published on its page (http: //www.rae. en / dictionary-pan-hispanic-of-doubts / appendixes/abbreviations).

Other formulas and abbreviations:

ed./eds. (edition / editor / s); coord./coords. (coordinator / coordinators); dir./dirs. (director / directors); comp. (compiler); trad. (translation / translator); see / see (instead of: v./vid); p./pp. (page / pages); t./tt. (tome / tomos); vol./vols. (volume / volumes); f./ff. (folio / folios); fig./figs. (figure / figures); Lam / Lam. (sheet / sheets); chap./caps. (chapter / chapters); no. / no. (number / numbers); leg./legs. (file / s); c. (box); book (will not be abbreviated); exp. (proceedings); carp. (binder); doc./docs. (document / s); AC. (circa instead of "to" or "h."); to. C. / d. C. (before Christ / after Christ); m. (dead) / r. (reign).

b) Terms or phrases included in the body of the text in a different language or words that you want to highlight, or are unusual will be in italics, unless they are cited in the original alphabet (Greek, Arabic, Hebrew, etc.). In the latter case, it is mandatory to indicate the Unicode font.

c) The titles of chapters, sections or epigraphs, and subsections or subheadings shall be written in lowercase (except initials, which must be capitalized), as well as the captions or the information in graphs or tables, and shall not bear final point.

d) The sections, epigraphs, and subsections will be ordered sequentially and sequentially, always with Arabic numerals, with the following progressive scheme: 1., 1.1., 1.1.1., without exceeding the third level.

e) The headings of the figures, tables, and graphs will be written in Times New Roman 10 points, centered and numbered as follows: Fig. 1., Fig. 2 .; Tab. 1., Tab. 2; Graphic 1, Graphic 2.

f) The images that wish to be included will be sent to the journal attached to the text in computer support, as separate files, marking in the text the places where they must be inserted, as well as, where appropriate, the corresponding captions in a separate file. It is the responsibility of the author to provide images of sufficient resolution and quality for printing (preferably 300 dpi), obtain the relevant permissions for the reproduction of other people's work, and ensure that the mentions in this regard appear in the manner of the transfer of the right of reproduction. The recommended file formats for photographic copies or nuanced images are JPG, JPEG, or TIFF, with a desirable resolution of 300 dpi.

6. Quotations in the text and at the foot of the page

The authors will adjust their articles to the following indications:

a) The notes will go at the foot of the page in an 8-point body with single line spacing and 0.5 cm French indentation (including their first line) and will be indicated in the text with a flown number (superscript). If the superscript number is next to any punctuation mark, it will always go after that punctuation mark. Notes with an asterisk are not supported.

b) Text citations inserted in the text will be placed in rounds and high quotation marks (“") when they do not exceed the three lines; when they exceed three lines, they will be put in 10 points, without quotation marks, with an indentation of 1.5 cm by the left margin and separated before and after the text by a line space.

c) Simple high quotes (") will be used to mark the quotes that go inside a phrase with high quotes (“"). For the definition or translation of a voice in a foreign language, the voice will be written in italics and single quotes ("), and the definition or translation will be in the round. To differentiate parentheses inside other parentheses, square brackets ([]) will be used.

d) Citations will follow the Chicago 17A system, always in footnotes. The first time a work is cited, it will be done in its entire version. Examples: Complete bibliographic reference in a footnote. Guy Cowlishaw and Robin Dunbar, Primate Conservation Biology (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2000), 104–7. Repeated citation from the same book (abbreviated): Cowlishaw and Dumbar, Primate ..., 49. Full citation in Bibliography: Cowlishaw, Guy, and Robin Dunbar. Primate Conservation Biology. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2000. Bibliographic references under the Chicago 17A system will not be entered in the body of the text but in the footnotes.

e) If several authors are cited in the same note, they are separated from each other with a semicolon. E.g., García Berrio, Theory of Literature, 51-52; Albaladejo and Chico Rico, "The Theory of Linguistic and Formal Criticism", 184-233; and Chico Rico, "Theory of Text and Literary Linguistics," 229.

7. References (Sources and Bibliography) cited.

Only the references quoted may be included, and these should be adjusted as follows:

a) At the end of the article, the Sources and Bibliography (including the hemerographic and cyber graphic elements) will be separately registered, which will be listed in alphabetical order of authors, according to the following guidelines: Surname and the full name of the author, Title and subtitle of the book (in italics), city of publication (in its original name): publisher, edition number (if it is not the first), year, All these data appear in rounds (except for the title of the book) and separated by commas. Examples: Fremantle, Richard, Florentine Gothic Painters. From Giotto to Masaccio. A guide to painting in and near Florence 1300 to 1450, London: Martin Secker and Warburg, 1975. León, Orfelio G. and Ignacio Montero, Research design: Introduction to the logic of research in psychology and education, Madrid: McGraw-Hill / Interamericana de España, 1993. When it is not the first edition, the corresponding number will be placed in a number flown to the right of the year of the reissue. In the case of reprinting, the place and year of the original edition shall be indicated, and then, in brackets, the abbreviation "re." followed by the year. When citing a modern work composed of several volumes and parts, its divisions and subdivisions will be respected, whether they are in Roman or Arabic numerals. If they are translations, they must be indicated after the title and before the city by the abbreviation (Trans. Span., Trans. English, etc., by Translator's name.). The works of the same author will be ordered chronologically, each time including the author's name. If several works published in the same year appear from the said author, they will be differentiated, adding each year one of the first letters of the alphabet (a, b, c, d ...).

b) Treatment of the names of the authors. All data must respect punctuation and spelling marks. The names of the authors will be given in full, avoiding the use of abbreviations as much as possible. Abbreviations will only be used in footnotes when the same work is cited for the second time. The order of the first and last names changes depending on whether they are footnotes or final references. See the following examples:

In footnote:

John Samples, “The origins of Modern Campaign Finance Law”, en The Fallacy of Campaign Finance Reform (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2006).

The second time the work is cited in a footnote:

10. Samples, “The origins of Modern Campaign Finance Law”, 5-10.

In final bibliography:

Samples, John. “The origins of Modern Campaign Finance Law”. En The Fallacy of Campaign Finance Reform. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2006.

c) In contributions in collective books, the surnames and full names of the author will be indicated. "Chapter title". In Book title. Place: Editorial, year. The name of the editor / coordinator will be preceded by "ed." or "coord." in the footnotes, and by the formula "edited by" or "coordinator by" in the final bibliography.

In footnote:

In final bibliography:

Descalzo Lorenzo, Amalia. “El arte de vestir en el ceremonial cortesano: Felipe V”. En España festejante: el siglo XVIII, editado por Margarita Torrione, 197-204. Málaga: Centro de Ediciones de la Diputación de Málaga, Servicio de Publicaciones, 2000.

As seen in the previous examples, the way you include the place of publication, publisher, and date information for books changes depending on whether it is a footnote or a final reference.

d) In articles in journals or newspapers, the title of the article will be enclosed in round quotation marks, preceded by the author’s name, followed by the details of the magazine or newspaper, the title will be in italics. Examples.:

In footnote:

Iván Rega Castro, “The “new Lepanto”? John V of Portugal and the battle of Matapan (1717)”, Journal of Iberian and Latin American Studies 24, no. 1 (2018): 93-106, https://doi.org/10.1080/14701847.2018.1438139

In final bibliography:

 f) References to documents and manuscripts will follow the following form: Typology of the document or manuscript (letter, consultation, relationship, order, decree ...), authorship or producing entity, and the recipient (if available), date (place, day, month and year developed); and then the current signature of the file or library with which this documentation is accessed: full name of the file or library (adding its initials in capital letters in the first reference), fund, unit in the corresponding language (file/leg., manuscript/ms., box/box, folder/folder, file / exp.…), and foliation/pagination (if necessary and with the formula fol./fols. or p./pp.). Examples:

In footnote:

If a document has already been mentioned, an abbreviated reference will be made to its signature by means of the acronym of the file or library included in the note corresponding to the first mention.

g) Citations from journals or electronic media on the internet will be made indicating all the data according to the above rules (author, year, title, publication, city, etc.), all ending in a comma, and after this comma the Internet ínk will be indicated and the word "access" will be enclosed in square brackets, followed by a colon and the date of the last query. Example:

h) When the cited work or article has a doi number, it must be included in its bibliographic reference. E.g., Surname, Name: Article title, Magazine, volume, year.http://dx.doi.org/xxxx

8. Illustrations

De Medio Aevo supports the inclusion of illustrations (images, plans, and graphics) up to a maximum of twenty. The source of the same must always be identified. The presentation of figures or illustrations and their placement in the manuscript must respect the size and mode of display recommended by the magazine layout consultants.

Illustrations or images in color or black and white will conform to the following guidelines:

a) All of them will be presented in digital format in JPG, TIFF, or BMP format, with sufficient resolution quality, preferably 300 dpi.

b) They will all go under the name "Fig.", numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals, and identified with all their data in the caption, including the source or origin of the image. A Word file must be sent separately with the list of captions, with their respective number (Fig. 1. xxxxxx; Fig 2. zzzzz).

c) The original images will be included in a separate folder, which will be sent electronically along with the Word document with the captions of the illustrations. However, the approximate place they should occupy in the text should be clearly indicated.

d) The authors of the articles will guarantee in writing that the images sent are free of payment for copyright, either because they have already been honored, or because the pictures are free to use. In any case, they must cite their origin, as well as their authorship, based on the right of citations outlined in article 32 of the Intellectual Property Law.

e) De Medio Aevo is not responsible for any litigation derived from the improper use of the images.

  10. Be sure to submit your Author ID: ORCID, Redalyc, Research Gate, Mendeley, Academia, Google Citations, etc.
  11. 12. Evaluation of articles

De Medio Aevo reserves the right to reject any original due to quality, form, or edition criteria, before proceeding to the evaluation process. The evaluation of the articles goes through three phases:

a) First formal review: The Editorial Board, after acknowledging receipt of the text to the author through his email address, will make an initial analysis of the article to check if it meets the requirements indicated in these "Authors Guidelines". Each article must be faithfully adapted to these standards; otherwise, it will be returned to the author for adaptation to these. This return will be communicated to the author in less than a month.

b) Evaluation by the double-blind peer-review process: After this first formal review, the article that has passed it will be submitted to the external opinion of two renowned specialists in the field, foreign to the Editorial Board, to evaluate its content through the double-blind peer review system, which implies the anonymity of the author and the evaluators.

Important details:

The fundamental criteria that will be taken into account for a positive evaluation of the articles will be the relevance of the selected sources, the quality of the methodology used, the originality of the topic, the academic relevance, the updating of the bibliography, the compliance with the editorial standards, the correct wording in the language of publication, the structure of the work, the validity of the conclusions and the general scientific interest of the text, as well as its most significant contributions for the areas covered by the journal.

The evaluations of the arbitrators will be specified in four possibilities: "Accepted," "Accepted with minor corrections," "Accepted with substantial corrections," or "Rejected."

In the event of an evaluation discrepancy between the two assigned referees, the article will be evaluated by a third specialist, whose opinion will settle the tie.

In the cases of "Accepted with minor corrections" and "Accepted with substantial corrections," the article will be returned to the author so that he may introduce the requested modifications or corrections.

If the text is "Rejected," the authors will be notified of the reasons argued by the evaluators to make such a decision.

De Medio Aevo undertakes to start and finish the evaluation process within a period not exceeding three months. The authors will be informed of the result of this review, as well as the evaluators' opinions or recommendations.

After knowing the reports, the author will have a correction period of fifteen working days, time in which he must make the appropriate corrections and amendments, and send the text to the Secretary of the Editorial Board of the journal, who will verify that they have been made the required changes before publishing.

In the event that the original is accepted by De Medio Aevo, its author, once informed, must communicate their agreement or resignation within a maximum period of seven days. The journal agrees to publish the accepted original papers within the year following its approval. Otherwise, you must request the author's agreement to adjust the new publication date or the withdrawal of the accepted original.

c) Final decision: Once the result of the double arbitration has been obtained, the Editorial Board will decide whether or not to publish the article, according to the following details.

Having heard the opinion of its national or international arbitrators, the Editorial Board will decide whether or not to publish the article, depending on the relevance and originality of its content and its formal structure.

The Editorial Board undertakes to communicate by email to the author the acceptance or rejection of his work within a period not exceeding one month after receiving the evaluations of the referees, also specifying in which issue of the journal it will be included.

The accepted papers will be published in their proposed form, except in case of grammatical or writing errors. In the latter case, the Editorial Board, without interfering in substantive matters regarding the content of the article, is granted the freedom to introduce slight modifications in terms of writing, spelling, punctuation, and graphic design.

The texts that pass the three phases of the review process will be published in order of reception and acceptance.

During proofreading, the author may only introduce errata corrections without making significant modifications to the texts. The authors must correct the first tests within a maximum period of fifteen working days from the delivery of the tests. Otherwise, it is understood that they accept the correction made by the writing of the journal. The second test will be in charge of the Editorial Board.

Once the issue has been published, all authors will be informed that they can download the final text of their contribution in PDF format on the journal's website.
