Interphonography in Spanish Post-Rock: The Use of Sampling in National Bands Associated with the Genre
Abstract
As a result of the rise of hip-hop and dance music, the use of samples has become a fairly common practice today. Nonetheless, it has been practically absent from rock music because it depends on an authenticity based on live performance and renouncing studio trickery. This article analyses the case of post-rock, one of the few genres combining sampling and the performance of rock music. More specifically, it focuses on the Spanish bands that have been associated with the genre since the mid- 90s. This analysis has been carried out by reformulating the functions Emilia Greco and Rubén López Cano assigned to sampling in accordance with Serge Lacasse’s idea of transphonography.
