La canción de Enrique Granados: un microcosmos estilístico
Abstract
The number of songs composed by Enrique Granados (1867-1916) is low in comparison to other genres he pursued. Apart from the individual songs forming part of his song cycles and taking into account lost works, Granados completed 18 vocal works for voice and piano. Some, such as the Canciones amatorias and the Tonadillas en estilo antiguo, have become representative of the composer’s output, as well as the international song repertory in general.
In this article, Granados’s songs are classified in three styles: modernist, historicist and pro-Spanish. Each of these is an ingredient in the construction of the Catalonian and Spanish identities. The modernist style can be linked to the French contemporary language, while the other two were combined to form a Spanish national identity based on the theories of Pedrell. These songs are also very solid from a formal point of view, contradicting the opinions of Granados scholars throughout the twentieth century.
