Heterorepetition as an element of interactive connection in digital conversation
Abstract
This paper aims to describe the interactive structure of digital conversation through the analysis of one of its formal features: heterorepetition. In other words, it investigates how the reiteration of words previously uttered by another interlocutor contributes to structuring the discourse and what interactive relationship this mechanism updates. To do so, the WhatsApp conversations contained in the MEsA corpus are analyzed according to the methodology of Pragmatic Linguistics. This analysis shows that the different variants of heterorepetition contribute to the informative progression and the recovery of the topic after an interlude, point out argumentative relationships of conformity or dissent, formalize enunciative relationships of correction, rectification and request for clarification, convey modal content that indicates various attitudes of the issuer towards what was previously communicated and also establish interactive links related to the operations of face management.
