Preparatory relationships

Keywords: discourse relations, preparation, opening, metadiscourse

Abstract

This research deals with discourse relations that open a discourse. Using a macrosyntactic approach and a pragmatic linguistic perspective, a distinction is made between text-, paragraph- and utterance-opening relations, which are properly textual structuring relations, and preparatory relations at these same levels. The latter, on which the study focuses, are metadiscursive. They announce the subsequent development of the statement, paragraph or text, pointing to the enunciative, modal, informative or argumentative relations, and are decisive in guaranteeing textual coherence
