Variational analysis of the implosive /s/ in low educational level of the city of Seville: data from PRESEEA-Se
Abstract
The aim of this essay is a sociolinguistic study on the variation of the /s/ in implosive position in the Spanish spoken in the city of Seville. For this purpose, 24 semi-structured interviews belonging to the the low educational level of Corpus PRESEEA-Seville have been used. In particular, we propose to analyze what linguistic and social factors influence the pronunciation of the different articulatory variants of the phoneme /s/ (sibilance, aspiration, elisión, assimilation and aspiration with assimilation). A quantitative analysis of the data and a subsequent statistical analysis of bivariate correlations and logistic regression have been carried out in order to find out the influence of the independent variables in the pronunciation of the /s/ implosive consonant when all the factors act simultaneously. The results show that the elision is the most frequent variant, reaching the highest percentages (as in others Andalusian cities: Malaga and Granada), followed by the aspirated realization.
