Abstract

Research in historical syntax needs to modify its goals as well as its methodology. It needs to use a historical method such as the comparative one. Comparison is what allows the establishment of a correspondance between a unit and its “continuation” in a later stage, thus determining the diachronic unit undergoing change. The path of categories, structures, constructions, and functions must be so analyzed.
