La atenuación en el discurso odontológico: casos clínicos en revistas hispanas
Abstract
The use of hedging strategies is described in 40 Dental clinical cases reports (CC), published in Spanish in Hispanic journals between 1999 and 2005.The hedges used in each rhetorical section are identified by means of a contextual analysis of genre and they are classified according to five categories: impersonal constructions, time deictic expressions, approximators, shields and compound hedges. The results show that there are abundant and varied strategies of hedging, used in similar frequencies in the three rhetorical sections of the CC. the use of impersonal constructions, approximators and the shields predominated; among the latter the epistemic modal "poder” (may) report the highest frequency. The approximators are used to express honesty, variability, vagueness, and several levels of certainty of the propositions. Hedging can thus be related to the position of the authors in the scientific community and to the characteristics of the CC as discursive genre.
