El paisaje lingüístico del Condado de Los Ángeles y del Condado de Miami-Dade: Propuesta metodológica
Abstract
This paper presents a methodological approach for a systematic analysis of a linguistic landscape. The goal of this type of analysis is to obtain quantifiable data in order to measure language vitality through its public utility. To do so, lexicon, syntax, morphology, and orthography are analyzed by using a set of specific parameters to contrast data and results collected from different linguistic landscapes. The proposed methodology and analysis are applied here to the linguistic landscapes of Los Angeles County and Miami-Dade County. The results show a correlation between this type of texts and the current, linguistic traits of Spanish in the communities where it is displayed. In particular, the results detect a preference for bilingual expression in both counties, while there is a higher frequency of normative Spanish and a more frequent code differentiation in Miami-Dade.
